Esther Hill (later Derr), 16 years old. Her older siblings all had studio portraits, but she was born much later than her siblings. By the time she came along, her parents could not afford studio portraits. Esther's started her 1st job at Merrit Underware when she was 16. She and her workmates went out to a studio for portraits.
Harold and Esther (Hill) Derr's home, built on Hill property directly across the road from the homestead. Harold built the house himself with the help of Esther's brothers. They started construction in 1954. Harold, Esther and daughters, Dorian and Lisa, lived across the street on the Hill homestead with Milton and Gertrude before and during construction. Harold worked on the house until money ran out, then started again when they saved more money. While the family lived with Esther's parents on the farm, in addition to Harold's job as an electrician, he helped on the farm. Harold's family moved in in 1959 when construction was complete. Lisa remembers 'Even though we were only moving across the street, Grampy was sad to see us move!' (Next to Derr's home (seen far right) is the home that Esther's brother Jacob built & lived in throughout his adult life.)
In 1945, Harold (middle) and two others sepnt 3 days in a life raft when their torpedo bomber crashed. They were assumed dead, their lockers were clear out, and MIA letters were send to their families. Whenever they heard a plane coming, they would have to hide themselves until they could recognize the plane. Here they are seen after being rescued with borrowed clothing. Harold says that the hardest part for him was knowing that his family received MIA letters and believed he was dead.
