Shire Valley Legacies visited many cemeteries while researching history for various projects.
As a community service, while in cemeteries, Beth photographed many additional monuments and tombstones than what was required for the project at hand, and SVL is making these available publicly on our web site.
Due to time involved, we did not rewrite all details on monuments/tombstones in the text, however we attempted to record the names and years on the stones, to facilitate web searching. If we know additional information, like alternate spellings, additional spouse, children, … that are not on the stone, we've also included these.
Much expense and many hours of work have been put into photographing, editing images, deciphering weather-worn stones, and web maintenance.

Jacob Merkel, son of Casper and Blantina (Blandina Hottenstein) Merkel. Jacob was born 21 Dec 1779, died 29 Dec 1850. He married Catharina Kerschner. Together their children were Elisabeth, Sarah, John, Maria, Samuel, Esther, Susanna, Hannah and Jacob.

Joel Johann Hoch, July 8, 1815 - Feb. 15, 1849, 33 y, 7 m, 7 d. Son of Philip & Elizabeth (Huy) Hoch. Married Esther Merkel. Their children were Olendo M. Hoch, Isabella Hoch, Merkel Hoch, Catherine Hoch, Sallie Ann Hoch, Hettie Merkel Hoch and Joel Hoch.
Monument reads: "In Remembrance of Johann Christian Mercklen, 1678 - 1766. A French Huguenot migrated to America seeking religious freedom and economic opportunity. In 1719 he traveled on the ship Phonix to America, from Amsterdam Holland, settling at Moselem Springs, Pa; purchasing land from W. Penn. He was a coach-maker, blacksmith, and operated a grist mill. A farther of nice: Catherina, Apollonia, Anna Maria, Helena, Franzina, Peter, Christian, George and Gaspard. Descendents surnames - Markle, Merkel and Markel of German descent." Johann Married Anna Catharine (Catherine) Benner (Bender) (Bruckner). Other sources list their (12) children as Jacob Merkel, Margaretha Catharine Merkel, Conrad Merkel, Maria Catarina Merckel, Frankiena Merkel, Maria Appolonia Merkel, Peter Merckel, Anna Maria Merkel, Anna Helena Marckel, Christian Merkel, George Merckel and Casper Merkel.
